God's Light in the Darkness

From scavenging at the dump, to student, to program helper

“My desire is to become a doctor, and help bring change in others’ lives, by letting my light shine in the world,” says Preciate, a former student and now helper in our Open Schools Worldwide program in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. These programs help to bring educational opportunities to marginalized children.

Preciate could only go as far as Grade 3 before her single mom could no longer afford the school fees. She also has 3 siblings. Then, in 2019, Open Schools Worldwide partnered with another NGO and sponsored the fees for 19 students, including Preciate.

Prior to this, she and many other children spent their days scavenging the local garbage dump, trying to help their parents support the family, by selling anything and everything useable. None of the children were able to go to school, with the chance of a brighter future.

Preciate welcomed the chance to go back to school and was put in Grade 6, where she quickly became a star pupil. Through the ministry of a partner church that was set up at the dump, she has also dedicated her life to the Lord.

Please continue to pray for Preciate, as her mother, in poor health, still struggles financially. Preciate has claimed Psalm 23:4 “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me,” to encourage her, as she keeps working towards her goal of one day becoming a doctor.

Pray for Open Schools Worldwide

    • Zambia: The schools are partially opened but uncertainty of our OSWW projects opening. Also, for the construction of structures and facilities in these projects.
    • Zimbabwe: Schools are opened partially and no proper directive to start our OSWW Programs because of Covid regulations.
