Big Home Academy Scholarship Fund

Beyond Borders partners with a private Ethiopian School, Big Home Academy, to provide scholarships to local children who have experienced displacement due to extreme poverty and other factors. Your support of the scholarship fund assists Big Home Academy in offering a quality education to vulnerable and financially needy children.

Meet Meseret

Meseret is an alumna of Big Home Academy. She graduated from 8th grade at Big Home Academy (BHA), passed her national exams and went on to high school – a dream come true for Meseret and her mother.

Neither Meseret nor her mother ever dreamed of having the opportunity to attend a private school like BHA and to receive a quality, loving education in a safe space where teachers care about their students, where classroom sizes are small (unlike the 50 plus students per class in Meseret’s previous educational settings), where there was a library, some playground equipment, better resources, and a pathway for future success.

Private schools weren’t for families like hers. Meseret’s mom had been sick for years and often was unable to work. Meseret’s father died years ago, so Meseret had been the one responsible to care for herself and her mother. When Meseret began at BHA she was 16 years old and entered into Grade 7.

Meseret and her mother are grateful for the opportunities that Big Home Academy provided to them. Meseret gained confidence in her academic abilities and improved her test scores. She began to hope that she would in fact graduate from high school one day. Meseret felt loved by the staff of Big Home Academy. It was a place where she could relax and learn without feeling worried.

And indeed, Meseret was loved by Big Home Academy. So loved, that the director of BHA and his family gave a small room in their home to Meseret and her mother to live in when their tiny shanty was flooded. This act of selfless generosity is not uncommon – over the past 20 years there have been numerous times when the director’s family has taken in children who are orphaned and worked to find them a place to live in addition to providing them education. Truly, this is a school staff that sees the needs of the poor and responds with what they have been given.

Kindness, love, and compassion are at the heart of Big Home Academy. This small school in Birayu, on the outskirts of Addis Ababa, is making a BIG difference in their community each and every day. With your help, we can be a part of supporting students like Meseret, so that they, too, will have access to a quality education and a brighter future.
