Elementary Teacher

At Dakar Academy (DA), qualified teachers invest their time and talents to design engaging lessons that bring content to life. We are looking for an experienced teacher to plan, organize, and implement an approved curriculum. Our ideal candidate will utilize differentiated instruction and varied teaching techniques to create an environment of student-centered learning that follows a North American curriculum. S/he should be passionate about the subject they teach, their students, and their job. The goal: for students to understand—not only know—what they are being taught, as they set their feet on the path to lifelong learning.

Established in 1961 as Dakar’s first international school and a Christian educational institution, DA’s vision is to produce well-rounded students, prepared for higher-level studies, whose Christian worldview permeates all aspects of their lives. To that end, we strive to care for each child’s academic, emotional, physical, and spiritual needs. 

Objectives of this Role: 

  • Foster interdisciplinary learning, teaching, and instruction according to North American curriculum standards, and the educational needs and abilities of individuals and groups of students
  • Integrate Christian worldview into course activities and assessments
  • Create a classroom culture that is welcoming, positive, and rigorous
  • Plan, prepare, and teach lessons, promoting the general progress and well-being of individual students and groups of students
  • Communicate, cooperate, and consult with school staff, and parents/guardians in the students’ best interest
  • Build knowledge by participating in professional development seminars
  • Create content units using the Understanding By Design framework
  • Mentor and disciple students in their journey of faith 

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:

1. Provide instruction in the appropriate curricular area(s) as assigned by the assistant director and/or principal

  • Clearly communicate student expectations for behavior, homework, and assessment
  • Develop lesson plans that are consistent with the assigned curriculum and also require higher-level thinking skills
  • Integrate the Christian worldview into course activities and assessments
  • Use effective, learner-centered instructional methods to meet the needs of each student in the class
  • Give homework assignments for review, practice, and/or enrichment
  • Design authentic assessments that require students to perform the competencies in the assigned curriculum
  • Evaluate and return assignments to students promptly
  • Maintain a positive learning environment
  • Design and implement assessments that measure progress towards academic standards
  • Use assessment data to refine instructional practices
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues

2. Maintain student records

  • Record attendance and tardies
  • Keep a record of student behavior reports
  • Record grades

3. Update curriculum

  • Develop curriculum for new courses in your curricular area
  • Regularly evaluate the curriculum, based on student performance
  • Revise as necessary
  • Update curriculum files with Curriculum Coordinator

4. Develop professional skills

  • Maintain certification(s)
  • Stay up-to-date on current research in your content area and on student learning
  • Develop professional and personal goals
  • Work to meet goals
  • Strive for continual improvement
  • View feedback as a tool to improve and grow in all teacher responsibilities

5. Participate on staff committees

  • Attend faculty meetings and devotions
  • Participate in departmental meetings

6. Other duties as assigned

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • State Teacher's Certificate
  • ACSI Certification
