Hope for the Nation Schools

Transforming children’s lives through education

Nestled in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, HBB Schools have been able to reach the underprivileged children in the poor neighbourhoods with Christian-values education. This school was started out of the necessity in 2001 as urbanization has grown rapidly and this also brought so many migrants from all over Indonesia. Many of these migrants ended up living in pockets areas in Jakarta adjacent to where they work. Due to the economic challenges, many of the children from these areas end up in the street or have to skip schools as the parents need them to help the family.

Started out by having informal school meeting in rented houses. These schools have grown significantly and made impacts on the communities where they operate. Currently, there are numbers of HBB school that have transformed the lives of the children and their parents. Focusing on both character development and formal education, the dream is to equip them for lives so that they can be agent of change in their community, city and country.

Jakarta is a city of 12 million people where the promise of better lives is a resounding theme. Unfortunately, the reality tends to be harsher where the migrants from other parts of Indonesia end up living in substandard conditions and barely have enough to support their daily sustenance. Sadly, the children from the migrants are the ones who suffer silently. Education would be something that can break this vicious cycle. This is where HBB schools are making the largest impact. Helping children to grow and study in a healthy and loving environment.

Our Vision & Mission is:

“to develop God-given talents and equip the children coming from low-income families with a quality education in their formative years so that they can be the next generations of Christian leaders who have Christ-like characters and integrity to bless their family and impact communities they live in.”

Project Plans

One of the HBB schools, located in North Jakarta, has recently moved from a temporary location to a permanent building for a better learning environment. The school is staffed with dedicated, skilled and loving teachers who are committed to nurture, develop and equip the children. Similarly to other HBB schools, the school is located in the impoverished neighbourhood in Jakarta where the residents are mainly made up of migrants from outside Jakarta and other Islands. The existence of this school has allowed children in this area to access quality education that focuses on both character development and academic excellence. Currently, there are 206 students in this location from Kindergarten to Year 7.

Despite of their positive impacts to the children’s lives, families and community, they are still facing financial shortfall due to the minimum tuition fees that these children could afford. The increasing living expenses in Jakarta have meant a double-edged sword for the school. On one hand, they are not able to increase the school tuition fees as this will burden the students and their families even more. On the other hand, the school also cannot increase the remunerations for staffs to meet the current standard of minimum wages in Jakarta. The teaching and administrative staffs in this school have dedicated their lives to impact the students’ lives using transformative education so that the children can be agents of change in their family, community, city and the country of Indonesia.

The current project was a continuation of the consultations and training that were done since 2015 to assist HBB schools to grow further. The focus of this project will be to assist one of the HBB schools that is located in North Jakarta. As the school has established itself in academic excellence, which is evidenced by numerous accomplishments. For this project, supporting their on-going monthly operations funds and improvement of the existing facilities (i.e. the school library) will be the priority.

1. On-going/General Operation Funds

To continue providing quality level education, the school requires some financial support to deal with the financial shortfall as they have been subsidizing the tuition fees to serve this low-income community. At the same time, they want to retain their dedicated staffs and have the ability to remunerate them closer to the minimum wage as many are struggling to keep up with the rising living expenses.

Target Goal: to support 206 students (2018/19 academic year) and incrementally increase the wages of the teachers and staffs of the school. Our aim is to raise up 200 donors, by the end of 2019, who are committed to support this cause on monthly basis on the amount of $40. With the commitment and support of 200 donors like you, together we can make a difference in these children’s lives.

2. Library

The school has reserved space within its premise for a library and this is ready to be used for students. Unfortunately, this space is underutilized and requires bookshelves, furniture and textbooks, books, references, other materials that can support the learning experience for the students. The library also requires some air-conditioners to create a more conducive learning environment for the students.

Target Goal: for this capital project, it is estimated $5,000 required to purchase bookshelves, furniture, air-conditioners, textbooks, books and references.
