Elementary Homeschool Co-Op Teacher

The International Christian School of Togo is a brand new school startup opening September 2024 as a small "Homeschool Co-op" for missionary families and growing into an international school focused especially on serving middle-to-upper class Togolese students. Join our school start up by teaching a small group of multi-grade elementary-age children of missionary families (and if desired, help shape and plan for the school startup of the International Christian School of Togo).

With a new school startup, especially in Africa, not too much can be counted on except uncertainty and the unexpected – along with God’s faithfulness and help. If that kind of challenge and adventure appeals to you (and you are a person who can be described as passionate, positive, flexible, and persistent), we’d love to have you join the team. For the 2024-2025 school year, we need a couple of people who are able to teach a small multi-age group of students, mostly children of English-speaking missionary families, like a homeschool parent would. This means that you don’t need to be a trained or certified teacher, although of course, that would be even better. If you are a trained classroom teacher, we would additionally love your help in shaping and planning for the regular school that seeks to serve especially middle-to-upper class Togolese families, along with students of other nationalities including missionary families. If desired, you would also have opportunities to help train the future local teachers of the school. Both those seeking only a one-year commitment as well as longer-term opportunities should apply.

Where will the school be and where will teachers live?

During the first year (2024-2025), the Homeschool Co-op will be run in the separate 2nd floor unit of the TeachBeyond missionary family's house in Sanguera, a relatively quiet and developing area in the outskirts of Lomé, the capital city of Togo. Adequate housing nearby will be secured (housing is also available in the school unit, IF desired).

What is Togo like? What language do I need?

Togo is a developing country in West Africa with much physical and spiritual poverty. Its climate is hot and humid, and there is a lot of dust and dirt to contend with. Although Togo is a country with much poverty, many amenities can be found in the bustling city of Lomé. Togo’s official language is French but over 45 local languages are also spoken. However, for teaching you'll need to be professionally proficient in English. Although it is helpful if you already speak French, it is not required; language learning will be arranged (for both French and Ewe, the main local language in the area) for day-to-day living.
